SCTC initially grew out of the Southampton Well Woman Centre, which had been set up by a local woman, Jan Craig, who was active in working with disadvantaged people.

As a charity, its ethos is to provide relatively accessible, high-quality counselling and psychotherapy.

​

It relies on client contributions and in the past has benefitted from fundraising events, including via the Jan Craig Memorial Trust. 

​

It has received grants from, amongst others, Southampton City Council, Eastleigh Borough Council and Lottery Awards for All.

​

It has also been in receipt of hugely-valued individual donations.
